Endodontics

Endodontics is the study of the inside of the tooth. It is most commonly recognized as the specialized dental field that performs root canals. Of all the treatments and services in the dental industry, the root canal has the worst reputation but due to modern dental technology and anesthesia, the reputation is unfounded today.

A root canal procedure can often be finished in just one appointment, relatively quickly and comfortably. With a 95% success rate, you can count on this endodontic treatment to help save your tooth and keep you smiling.

Why might I need a root canal?

There are a number of reasons why you may need a root canal. These include but are not limited to: a very deep cavity that extends into the nerve; a blow to the tooth that exposes the nerve; or a crack in the tooth that extends into the nerve of the tooth. Though a root canal is often required when a nerve has become vulnerable and infected, it is not always necessary. After examining your damaged tooth, Dr. Levitin will discuss your options for care with you in order to help you make the best decision.

Signs/Symptoms

  • Moderate to severe toothache pain when drinking hot or cold liquids or foods that lingers afterward
  • Moderate to severe pain when biting down on the tooth
  • Sensitivity to tapping or pressure on the tooth
  • Toothache that wakes you up in the middle of the night
  • A pimple on your gum that releases pus or blood
  • Radiating pain from one area of the mouth to another

In some cases, a patient may not feel any pain or suffer any of the previous symptoms, yet Dr. Levitin or one of our team may find an abscess forming that could destroy the bone around a tooth during a checkup. This is one of the reasons it’s so important to have regular checkups! If an abscess is caught early enough, it may be possible to save the tooth without a root canal procedure.

Process

Despite the negative and chilling scenes in movies, root canals are almost always pain-free! Dr. Levitin will always insure that you are totally numb before the procedure begins, well cared for during the procedure, and comfortable after it is over. You may need an over-the-counter painkiller afterwards, like an Advil, but the alternative to a root canal — a tooth extraction — takes longer to heal and is more expensive to restore.

If you suffer from any of the symptoms listed on this page and you would like to schedule a consultation, please use the form on this page or call Mile High Smiles at 303-232-1830. You can count on Dr. Levitin and our entire team to provide you with exceptional care!
