If My Crown Came Out, Can it be Glued Back On?

What You need to Know...

Crowns are caps that fit over the teeth. They’re meant to last you for a while, but crowns aren’t forever so sometimes they can unintentionally fall out. If this happens to you, don’t panic but understand that there are some things that you can do to help solve this problem!

First, it is recommended that you store your crown in a safe place. If you choose to keep your crown in a sandwich bag, this will work fine as long as it doesn’t get misplaced. Most importantly, do not try to glue your crown back on by yourself. Super glue or craft glue is not appropriate for a crown, so do not try and use these products. Doing something like this can cause further damage to your tooth or mouth, so it is best to leave this to the professionals.

Second, contact your dentist immediately. It is very imperative that your dentist is notified as quickly as possible after an incident like this so that an appointment can be made to assess both your mouth and the crown and to understand what can be done in the meantime while you wait for the appointment if it isn’t for a day or so. You can expect that when you see the dentist for your appointment that he or she will determine if the current crown can be re-cemented back onto the tooth or if a new crown may need to be made.

Third, while you are waiting to see the dentist and if instructions were provided to you on how to care for your exposed tooth or what you can do to prevent further complications to specifically follow them. Some dentists may recommend over-the-counter temporary cement for the meantime, but this is only if your dentist has instructed you to do so. Otherwise, be careful of eating or drinking any food or drinks that are hot or cold as your exposed tooth can be very sensitive to these temperatures.
