Does Accutane Cause Tooth or Gum Pain?

What You need to Know...

Acne can make you feel self-conscious and prevent you from enjoying the fulfilling life you deserve. When topical treatments from the drugstore and dermatologist do not work or lead to temporary results, accutane may be an option.

Accutane is a powerful drug that is often prescribed for individuals with severe acne. While it can effectively clear your skin and restore your self confidence in about four to five months, it does come with some serious side effects.

Some of the most common side effects of Accutane are dry skin, chapped lips, mood changes, exhaustion, nosebleeds, and slow healing of cuts and sores. The good news is that these side effects almost always go away once the treatment has come to an end. Also, there is no correlation between the presence or severity of side effects and how effective the drug is.

Recently, we’ve had some patients on Accutane ask us how this drug may affect their oral health. In most cases, Accutane does not affect the teeth, mouth, and gums. Rarely, the dryness of the mouth, which can be seen during Accutane usage, affects oral health. Our Raleigh orthodontist friend, Dr. Jason Gladwell, has mentioned that many people getting braces and Invisalign are asking about Accutane and its effects as well.

However, if you experience tooth or gum pain while you are taking this drug, it is in your best interest to visit our office so that Dr. Levitin can pinpoint the exact cause of the issue.
